Meet the Author:

David Wemhoff

David Wemhoff brings a wealth of expertise to his role as editor of The American Proposition. With decades of experience as an attorney, educator, and author, Mr. Wemhoff’s career is rooted in the careful examination of legal, political, and social systems. His insights into America’s influence on the world are informed by both professional practice and academic rigor.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor’s Degree in Government, Mr. Wemhoff also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. His commitment to intellectual inquiry led him to earn a Master of Laws (LLM) in International and Comparative Law from Indiana University, where he graduated cum laude. Over nearly 30 years of legal practice, he has represented clients in civil litigation, criminal defense, and business transactions. He is admitted to practice in Indiana, California, and various federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.

As an educator, Mr. Wemhoff taught courses on Business Law, Constitutional Law, American Government, and State and Local Government at the college level. His teaching and professional experiences are complemented by his active participation in organizations like the Society of Catholic Social Scientists and the Catholic Press Association, where he honed his ability to analyze and communicate complex ideas.

Contributions to Scholarship and Literature

David Wemhoff’s body of work reflects his deep interest in exploring America’s socio-political and cultural dynamics. He edited Redeeming a Father’s Heart: Men Share Powerful Stories of Abortion Loss and Recovery (2007) and authored Just Be Catholic (2011), a practical guide on Catholic identity and living. His collection of poetry, From the Hillside (2019), showcases his reflective and creative side.

His most ambitious project to date, John Courtney Murray, Time/Life, and the American Proposition, was seven years in the making and draws from over 30 collections of personal and official papers, as well as more than 500 additional sources. This 990-page work meticulously examines how the United States wielded ideological power during the Cold War to reshape global and religious narratives. It has been praised by leading scholars as an essential contribution to understanding America’s doctrinal influence.

Mr. Wemhoff continues to delve into these themes, working on two new books that further explore the nature of America’s global impact.
